British mining company Shanta Gold has reported one of the country’s largest gold deposits yet, an estimated Ksh683 billion worth of the precious metal in Kakamega.
Shanta Gold Kenya Limited is a wholly owned subsidiary of Shanta Gold Limited, a UK-based mining company listed on the London Stock Exchange (AIM: SHG).
The company was set up after Shanta Gold Limited acquired 100% of the West Kenya Gold Project from Acacia Exploration Kenya (formerly a subsidiary of Barrick Gold) through a 2020 transaction.
This acquisition secured licenses for the Isulu and Bushiangala gold deposits in Kakamega County, as well as further licenses in Siaya and Vihiga counties, creating one of East Africa’s largest undeveloped gold resources.

The West Kenya Gold Project (WKGP) is a major proposed gold mining development covering approximately 600 square kilometres of exploration and development rights, with a 2024 resource estimate of over 1.7 million ounces of gold, including 722,000 ounces in the indicated category at an average grade of 11.45g/t Au.
It has two main deposits: Ramula-Mwibona and Isulu-Bushiangala, both of which have been formally certified as having mineral resources.
Ramula-Mwibona deposit is planned for open-pit mining, operated under a contractor-mining model.

The contractor supplies and runs all mining equipment, while Shanta Gold maintains technical oversight, including mine design and geological planning.
Isulu-Bushiangala deposits are high-grade and will be mined underground using mechanised longhole stoping with cemented rock fill.
These underground operations are handled by Shanta Gold employees, with full ownership of the mining process.
The project spans approximately 556 square kilometres within the Lake Victoria Goldfields, a renowned gold-producing region in Africa.
