Earlier in the year, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) reported that the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) saw passenger traffic rise in the second quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024.
According to the KNBS Quarterly GDP Report for Q2 2025, the number of passengers increased by 10.3 percent, reaching 658,600. Freight volumes on the SGR also increased, with cargo moved rising 8.7 percent to 1,894,400 metric tonnes.
SGR passengers increase
This marks the first rebound in passenger numbers since Kenya Railways introduced a 50 percent fare hike at the start of 2024. Before this recovery, passenger figures had dropped from 531,700 in Q1 2024 to 529,600 in Q1 2025, a decline of 0.9 percent.
KNBS further noted that overall SGR ridership in 2024 fell by 282,000 passengers compared to 2023, with 2,447,000 travellers recorded in 2024, down from 2,729,000 the year before.
