Kenyans have rushed to siphon fuel after a Nairobi-bound train carrying petroleum overturned and caused a spillage on Wednesday, September 18, in Kibwezi Makueni.
Speaking to witnesses at the scene who confirmed the incident stating that some of the wagons derailed.
They said that some of the residents rushed to the scene and started siphoning fuel that was spilling from the wagons.
At the time of publishing, no casualties had been reported as police officers tried to cordon off the area.
“Police officers have arrived at the scene and are confronting Kenyans who are using motorbikes to carry the siphoned fuel,” one of the witnesses told The Kenya Times.
Train Spills Fuel in Kibwezi
The witness added that the scene happened right under the bridge heading towards Nairobi City.
In images seen by The Kenya Times, it depicts two wagons of a train tilting to one side, while the rest of the locomotive remains intact.
Local residents are also seen observing the scene from a distance as police officers work to restore the derailed wagons back onto the track.

The freight train was coming from Mombasa headed to Nairobi before several wagons spilled an unknown amount of fuel.
This is not the first incident of a train derailing and spilling fuel in Kibwezi.
