Ewura DG Explains Fuel Prices Reduction
Ewura’s Director General, Dr. James Mwainyekule, explained that October’s fuel price caps decreased due to the September 2024 Arabian market prices.
“The fuel prices in the country are based on the Free on Board (FOB) prices from the Arabian market. The October 2024 prices reflect the market trends from September 2024,” he explained.
Mwainyekule said the costs of fuel importation (Premiums) have increased by an average of 2.63% for petrol and decreased by 16.58% for diesel and 3.39% for kerosene at the Dar es Salaam Port.
The costs for petrol and diesel have increased by an average of 11.56% in Tanga and 9.56% in Mtwara.
Foreign Exchange Rates
The costs of fuel (FOB) and importation costs (Premiums) are paid using foreign currencies, including the U.S. dollar.
For October 2024 prices, the average foreign exchange rate (Applicable Exchange Rate) has decreased by 2.67%.
Warning to Retailers & Wholesalers
Ewura directed retailers to sell fuel prices at the provided prices and warned to take legal action against people who disobey the order.
“Retail fuel traders are required to sell fuel at the prices shown in Table No. 3. Similarly, wholesale fuel traders must sell fuel at the prices indicated in Table No. 2. Strict legal actions will be taken against any trader who violates this order,” Ewura said.

The Authority directed fuel stations are required to clearly display the prices of fuel products on visible signs showing the prices, discounts, and promotional offers provided by the station.
Ewura advised customers to purchase fuel from stations offering the lowest prices where possible to encourage competition.
“It is illegal to sell fuel without displaying clearly visible price signs for customers. Severe penalties will be imposed on stations that fail to comply with legal requirements under the relevant regulations,” Ewura said.
