Abdulswamad Shariff Nassir has been sworn in as Mombasa County Governor today, Thursday, September 15.
The Governor together with his Deputy Francis Thoya took their oaths and signed their certificates at the Mama Ngina Waterfront where the ceremony took place.
Abdulswamad Nassir was declared the winner in the mini elections conducted by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission where he garnered 119,083 over his competitor Hassan Omar with 98,105 votes.
According to the IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, the Mombasa elections had been postponed following alleged harassment of the commission’s staff while executing their mandate.
“The Commission is concerned that some of its critical staff who objectively and impartially performed their duties at the National Tallying Centre are being intimidated and harassed through profiling and/or arbitrary arrests,”
“This has instilled fear within the staff, who are now unable to report to the office for duty. This harassment must stop forthwith.” wrote Chebukati.
