Former Nyatike MP Edick Anyanga has been freed on Ksh300,000 cash bail by Migori Law Courts pending plea taking set for August 25 over the alleged attempted murder charges.
Anyanga was arrested by police on Wednesday, July 26 for shooting 35-year-old Justus Ochieng on Saturday, July 22, 2022, shortly after he left a local pub at Lwanda Konyango at around midnight.
“Edick Omondi Anyanga has been arrested and is to be arraigned before Migori law court tomorrow 27/07/2022 to be charged with the offence of attempted murder contrary to section 220 of the penal code,” the police report read in part.
According to a police report, the MP who is vying for an elective seat in the August 9 General Elections and an associate of his confronted Justus and his friend Calvin Omondi accusing him of going against his political ambition and
it was then that Anyanga discharged his firearm and shot the victim on the right side of the hip.
“MP candidate Nyatike constituency Edick Anyanga Omondi and his personnel who started threatening Justus Ochieng while inside the vehicle claiming that he has been going against his political ambitions and in the process Omondi discharged his firearm shooting Justus on his right side of the hips and sustained injuries,” the police report read in part.
Nyatike’s arrest followed a demonstration held by Tom Odege and his supporters who protested that the assailant was still at large three days after he committed the offence.
Addressing the media, Odege claimed that after shooting Justus, Anyanga went ahead and step on him frustrating efforts by people around to take him to the hospital.
“He thought the boy was dead as he was guarding his body frustrating the efforts by people to take him to the hospital. He had to stay at the scene for two hours before he was rushed to the hospital,” Odege stated.
K24 Digital further reported that the victim was later taken to Sori Lakeside Hospital where he is currently admitted and in a stable condition.
The police recovered Anyanga’s pistol SIG SAUVER 2022 SERIAL NUMBER SP2022 and a magazine of 12 live ammunition calibre 9mm kept to be used as an exhibit.
On his part, Anyanga claimed that he shot Justus after he was attacked by people in a Probox who were armed with weapons.
He claimed that his attackers had plans to eliminate him and that he shot the victim to protect himself.
“They tried opening the door and I came out and I shot to scare them because this is my life. They ran and another gunshot from nowhere was heard and that is when we escaped. I made one gunshot but in this case, there were two. This means the people had rungus, pangas, and guns,” Anyanga stated.
