A man in Eldoret sent the court in stitches of laughter and shock after he admitted to smoking bhang as part of his campaign for presidential aspirant George Wajackoyah whose plan is to legalise marijuana for commercial purposes if elected into the country’s top office.
47-year-old Boniface Mutua further told Eldoret Senior Resident Magistrate Christine Menya that he is a staunch supporter of Wajackoyah adding that he smokes marijuana to promote the Roots Party’s manifesto.
Mutua was nabbed by police on July 11 at Bahati estate in Ainabkoi sub-county, Uasin Gishu County after he was found with three rolls of bhang worth Ksh90.
The accused who pleaded guilty to the charges against him said he wants to be the first commercial farmer of marijuana if Wajackoyah becomes Kenya’s president.
“For now, I smoke bhang to gain courage and voluntarily campaign for Prof Wajackoyah, who has promised to legalise the cultivation and smoking of bhang,” he said.
The court urged Mutua to stop smoking marijuana until his candidate is elected and manages to legalise the drug.
“You will be sentenced after your own plea of guilty since for now, it is illegal to trade and abuse bhang without a prescription from a doctor,” the magistrate told Mutua.
The case will be mentioned on July 27 after the magistrate receives a pre-sentencing report from probation officers.
