The Kirinyaga County Assembly has announced the vacancy of the Speaker seat on their website.
According to the website statement, the speaker’s seat will be declared vacant upon the first sitting of the County Assembly on Wednesday, September 21.
“The office of the speaker shall be declared vacant upon the first sitting of the county assembly on Wednesday, September 21 at 10:00 am. Interested persons qualified to be elected (as Speaker) are therefore invited to submit their nomination papers,” the statement read.
According to Article 178(1) of the Kenyan Constitution, each county should have a speaker, elected from among persons that are not part of the County Assembly.
To qualify for the seat, one is required to be a Kenyan Citizen for at least 10 years prior to the election, a registered voter, satisfy moral and ethical requirements as per the constitution and be elected in accordance with standing orders of the respective county assemblies by persons qualified to be elected as County Assembly members.

The statement further instructed interested members to pick nomination papers from the Kirinyaga Assembly clerk, Saturday, September 17 is the submission deadline.
“Nomination papers can be collected from the office of the clerk of the county assembly at the county assembly of Kirinyaga, Kerugoya offices during working hours,” the notice read.
Nominated and elected MCAs are set to be sworn in during the first Assembly sitting and thereafter elect their speaker.
The Kirinyaga County Assembly comprises of 20 elected MCAs and 12 nominated.
