The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Returning Officers (ROs) met with the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Haji on Wednesday, August 24, demanding protection.
During the meeting, the ROs had are said to have complained of harassment and threats before, during and after the election.
They want authorities to urgently address their security concerns.
During the meeting, the distraught Returning officers told the DPP that they no longer feel safe executing their mandate.
The ROs wanted to file a petition at the ODPP seeking assurance that their safety and security will be guaranteed.
“IEBC ROs today met with the DPP to seek the reassurance of their security in light of intimidation, threats, and ethnic profiling.
“The officials also decried that they have suffered physical, emotional, material, and reputational damage while performing their duties,” the DPP stated.
The ROs raised concern with DPP Haji after Embakasi East Returning Officer Daniel Musyoka was found murdered and his body had visible signs of torture.
“The DPP assured them that ODPP remains committed to executing its constitutional mandate in accordance with the rule of law and will leverage the MOU with IEBC to ensure they get access to justice and work with the IG of Police for their security,” the ODPP stated.
