The new Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is sorry about the condition at The Mama Lucy Hospital, after paying an impromptu visit on Sunday 11.
The visit happened not long after a mother, Maureen Onyango, died due to blood loss after giving birth to twins via cesarean.
To his shock, the first scene at the hospital was a mother lying on the waiting area bench after giving birth due to lack of beds.
Sakaja revealed that the hospital’s maternity unit was congested and the ration between the doctors and the patients not as recommended.
Expectant and new mothers were also being forced to share beds.
Waiting for long hours to be attended to and the sharing of beds may pose risks to patients, especially new mothers.
“The situation is not good! Mothers should not be sharing beds, patients not being attended to on time, drugs not being available,” Sakaja stated.
The Governor went on to apologize on behalf of previous governance and promised to improve the condition and amenities in the hospital.
The mama Lucy Hospital is one of the health facilities that was under the Nairobi Metropolitan Services.
“I apologize on behalf of the previous administration as well as the NMS for the state of things. We will take better care of you. I will not rest until we achieve this,” the governor assured.
Sakaja also stated that nobody should lose a loved one because of poor health services. He said that as he condoled Robert Omondi, Moureen’s husband.

According to Robert, the wife had died due to post-delivery bleeding. He said he called for help but none of the doctors showed up.
Maureen died at Kiambu Level Five Hospital, after they rushed her there for particular care at their Intensive Care Unit.
