Raila Odinga has been cleared to run for presidency in the August 9, general elections.
The Azimio la Umoja One Kenya presidential flag bearer and his running mate, Martha Karua, were handed a certificate on Sunday, June 5 after presenting his credentials before the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati at the Bomas of Kenya.
“To Martha Wangari, the documentations are in order, and I approve of the nomination of Raila Odinga as a presidential candidate for the elections slated for August 9, 2022,” Chebukati stated.
Raila Odinga expressed his confidence in IEBC towards holding credible elections, saying that the commission has the capacity to conduct free and fair elections. He then urged them to live by the script and do exactly what the people of Kenya expect of them.
Moreover, Mr. Odinga also assured citizens that his team members will conduct themselves appropriately during the election period.
“We want to promise you that we are going to conduct ourselves as candidates in a manner that conforms with the requirements of the electoral laws and the constitution of Kenya,” Mr. Odinga added.
Raila Odinga becomes the fifth presidential candidate to be cleared by the electoral body, after Kenya Kwanza flag bearer William Ruto, Roots Party leader George Wajackoyah, Agano Party’s David Mwaure and Umoja Summit Party’s Walter Mong’are.
Likewise, out of the 12 presidential hopefuls that the commission assessed, no independent candidate has managed to be cleared yet.
Nonetheless, Raila and Martha are set to hold a rally at the Undugu Grounds in Langata later in the day to drum up support for their presidential bid.
Also, the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition presidential candidate is scheduled to unveil his Manifesto on Monday, June 6 at the Nyayo National Stadium in nairobi.
