The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), had set May 23 for a pre-nomination meeting. Thus, the 55 aspirants seeking for the presidential seat in the August 9, polls will have a long, jam-packed week.
To be eligible to run, each aspirant must submit an electronic version as well as a list of at least 2000 supporters from each of the majority of counties to the IEBC.
Moreover, candidates will also be required to submit copies of their supporter’s identification documents.
Both the presidential and gubernatorial candidates will only be cleared after the presidential returning officer and county returning officers have determined their qualifications during the registration period.
In addition, out of the candidates vying for Kenya’s presidency, fourteen are leaders of various political parties, one from a coalition party, and forty others running as independent candidates.
Nonetheless, by the time the May 16 deadline came, IEBC had received a total of 244 gubernatorial aspirants, including 167 political party candidates and 77 independent candidates.
