Josphat Mwaura is a seasoned finance and management expert with over three decades of professional experience spanning both the public and private sectors.
Additionally, Mwaura is highly skilled in strategic planning, business strategy, and management consulting, with extensive experience in financial analysis, accounting, and reporting.
Josphat Mwaura Career Background
His career began at Coopers & Lybrand in 1984, where he progressed from Assistant to Senior, specializing in business services, financial modeling, and the implementation of accounting systems.
He later served as Financial Controller at Oxford University Press (Eastern Africa), overseeing finance and administration functions and restructuring operations for greater efficiency.
From 1993, he worked as an Independent Consultant, handling financial planning projects for Magadi Rail, conducting commodity audits in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and developing financial systems for various organizations.

In 1995, he joined KPMG East Africa, where he spent nearly 25 years in various leadership roles, including Managing Consultant, Partner, and ultimately CEO and Senior Partner.

He also spearheaded the Top 100 Mid-Sized Companies Survey, a joint initiative by KPMG and Nation Media Group.
After leaving KPMG, Mwaura served as Director at Starehe Boys’ Centre and School from 2020 to 2024, helping deliver its mission of educating and empowering boys in need.
He is currently an Independent Consultant, continuing his work in leadership, financial strategy, and institutional development.

Mwaura is an alumnus of the Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS), where he completed a Leadership Development Programme in 2008 — a course that included international modules in Moscow and St. Petersburg, focusing on organizational leadership and strategic management.
In 2002, he attended the Harvard Kennedy School, where he pursued studies in Macroeconomic Programme Management, enhancing his understanding of economic governance and policy implementation.
Mwaura is also a Certified Public Accountant (CPA-K), having trained at the Strathmore School of Accountancy between 1985 and 1990 — a foundation that laid the groundwork for his expertise in financial management and corporate governance.
