The South African music industry is mourning the loss of three prominent musicians in just a span of five weeks.
Gloria Bosman, Costa Titch, and AKA were all celebrated figures in their respective genres, and their untimely deaths have sent shockwaves throughout the industry.
Gloria Bosman, a renowned South African jazz musician, passed away on March 14, 2023, at 50. Bosman had been known for her soulful and soothing voice and had garnered international acclaim for her music. Her family released a statement informing the public that Bosman had peacefully passed away at her home after a short illness and was surrounded by loved ones at the time of her passing.
Just a day before Bosman’s passing, Costa Titch, a rising star in the South African music scene, died while performing at the Ultra Music Festival held in Johannesburg. Titch, whose real name was Constantinos Tsobanglou, was only 27 years old and had a history of epilepsy. Videos of his performance show him falling on stage before being lifted by one of his entourages. However, he collapses again and falls off the stage, with attempts at first aid backstage proving unsuccessful.
Before his sudden death, Titch had collaborated with AKA, another top South African musician who was also recently tragically killed. AKA, whose real name was Kiernan Forbes, was gunned down outside an upscale restaurant in Durban on February 12, 2023. Forbes had been in the company of friends when a gunman ran up and opened fire, resulting in his death and that of one of his friends.
