Over the past months, the country has undergone much turmoil regarding abductions and corruption issues, including the anti-government protests by the Gen Zs against the 2024 Finance Bill. Owing to these uncomely acts the Catholic Church has issued 5 immediate demands to the Kenya Kwanza government to be acted upon by President William Ruto.
While addressing the media on November 14, 2024, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) raised various national interest concerns that constantly affect the nation. The concerns outlined included the heightened corruption, the rampant abductions, the political rifts, the unfulfilled promises and the various shortcomings in the new Health Authority.
“We the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops feel compelled to voice our grave concerns regarding the troubling political climate that has gripped our country,” the KCCB chairperson Maurice Muhatia remarked in a statement.
Further, he added, “We have made clear statements many times in the recent past with very little response from the government. Despite the calmness we are experiencing there is a lot of anxiety, and most people are losing trust in the government.”
Consequently, the Bishops raised several concerns, including the political rifts within the government, which have fueled tensions and deepened divisions among the people. They also highlighted how these conflicts have fostered an atmosphere of distrust both among citizens and within the government itself.

Other Demands
The second demand touched on the heightened corruption in the country by the leaders. In addition, the Chairperson noted that country is troubled by the insensitivity manifested by the legislators in carrying out their tasks.
Moreover, he registered dissatisfaction citing that the elected leaders have allowed themselves to be captured and compromised in corrupt deals.
“Corruption may not always involve financial benefits but the unjust use of position, and authority or abusive use of offices,” he elaborated.
He further lamented, “The massive greed we are experiencing, is shocking and heartbreaking.
Subsequently, violation of human rights and freedom of speech formed part of the concerns raised by the KCCB. The chairperson highlighted on the abductions, and disappearances, torture, and killings of Kenyans which have seemed to be recurring.
Additionally, he also decried the increasing murders on women stating that these acts have caused must anger, and disgust.

“Many families are still grappling with the loss of their children who were brutally killed, injured, or went mission following what is referred to as the Gen Z demonstrations in June 2024,” he noted.
The KCCB therefore questioned on who should be responsible on the abductions. Further, they wondered whether the government is shorthanded in stopping these incidents from happening. Furthermore, they insisted that the government must protect the life of every Kenyan as stipulated in the Constitution.

At the same time, the KCCB touched on the culture of lies, NHIF, unkept promises and misplaced priorities.
“The culture of lies is slowly replacing the and respect that Kenyans deserve. Basically, it seems that truth does not exist and if it does it is only what the government says,” the statement read.
Unfortunately, they noted that Kenyans have helplessly tolerated the constant lies told by politicians. They emphasized that citizens must stop applauding or validating these lies and instead focus on seeking the truth.
Lastly, they pointed out that unfulfilled promises are undermining essential services and contributing to the growing unemployment crisis in the country.
