The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has announced the closure of the Kapyego–Chesoi–Kilangata (B15) Road due to heavy rainfall that triggered flash floods and landslides in several parts of Elgeyo Marakwet County, resulting in fatalities and major road damage.
In a public notice issued on November 2, KeNHA stated that the closure affects sections at Kilangata, Murkutwo, Chesongoch, and Kabetwa, where torrential rain had washed away parts of the highway, leaving motorists stranded.
A multi-agency rescue operation is currently underway involving the Ministry of Interior and National Coordination, KeNHA, and the County Government of Elgeyo Marakwet to recover victims and restore connectivity.
“The Authority is working tirelessly to access the affected sections and remove the massive boulders and debris resulting from the heavy storm water,” said Acting Director General Eng. Luka Kimeli in the statement.

“Further, efforts are underway to restore the cut-off sections and mobility.”
40-Meter Gap Along the Road
According to KeNHA, the vented drift across the River Mon at Chesetan along the Biretwo–Arror Road was completely overwhelmed by stormwaters and collapsed, creating a 40-meter gap that has cut off transport between the two regions.
The authority has warned motorists to replan their journeys, as the roads remain impassable due to safety reasons.
The deluge, which began earlier this week, has left trails of destruction across Elgeyo Marakwet, with several villages reporting mudslides, washed-away bridges, and blocked access roads.
Rescue teams, supported by the Kenya Red Cross, are using drones and heavy equipment to search for survivors and assess the extent of the damage.
Citizens Warned of Landslide-Prone Zones
Authorities have urged residents living in landslide-prone zones to relocate to safer areas as heavy rains continue to pound the Rift Valley region.

The Kenya Meteorological Department had also issued alerts warning of more flash floods in highland and escarpment areas over the weekend.
KeNHA stated that the road will remain closed until engineers complete an assessment and temporary crossings are established.
The agency is coordinating with county emergency services to expedite debris clearance and road restoration once weather conditions improve.
Motorists traveling between Kapyego, Chesoi, and Kilangata have been advised to use alternative routes and exercise caution due to loose soil, rock falls, and ongoing rescue operations.
