Mosop Member of Parliament Abraham Kirwa has raised an alarm over potentially ineffective and harmful medication in Kenya, days after returning to the country. The lawmaker spent months abroad fighting for his life.
In an interview on Monday, December 8, 2025, Kirwa revealed that during a medical emergency last year, the treatment he received at a Kenyan hospital allegedly worsened his condition instead of improving it.
According to the legislator, his health only stabilized after receiving the same medication in the US.
While he was hit by a stroke last year, one that he says nearly ended his life, and was while he was on medication and admitted to the hospital.
He narrated how his condition deteriorated while receiving treatment in Kenya, only improving when doctors abroad replaced the very same medication with versions sourced overseas.
“When I was admitted, my injection function was at 25, so it came down from 25 to 22 and later went to 20 and 18. It continued to go down to down so when we were 15% my wife took me to other to another hospital for medication. I asked the doctor why my body was reacting to their medicine and was not reacting to other medicines, and the doctor told me that what they were giving me was the real medicine,” said Kirwa

Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya’s Response to Kirwa’s Claims
The Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya stated that no formal complaint has been filed regarding MP Abraham Kirwa’s allegations, highlighting that the hospital he mentioned is a reputable institution.
Dr. Wairimu Mbogo, president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya, urged Kirwa to report the matter to the authorities for investigation to avoid future harm to other patients.
“If there is a risk, can we have it formally reported, so that it follows the right channel and we will figure out if these products actually had a problem because I can imagine the product did not go to that hospital alone , it might have gone to many other hospitals and affected many more patients and we will deal with that particular product and consult with the manufacturers to know where that particular problem is coming from ” said Wairimu Mbogo.
Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga added that Kenya is moving toward a digital track-and-trace system to ensure medicines are traceable from manufacture to patient, a step aimed at preventing similar issues in the future.

However, the PS for Medical Services, Dr Ouma, confirmed that the matter has been noted as a matter of concern, even though it has not been proven.
“This one is not proven. I think we take it as an important concern but there is no proof to what he said. So, until the regulator who is the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya make a check, we have already instituted that,” said Dr. Ouma Oluga.
