Nakuru Boys High School is one of Kenya’s premier national boys’ secondary schools, located in Nakuru City, which boasts a rich legacy that dates back nearly a century.

The institution’s origins trace to 1927 when construction began under the leadership of Edward Macleay Grigg, Kenya’s 15th colonial governor

Initially established as Francis Scott High School, it was exclusively reserved for the children of white British administrators.

By the late 1950s, the school had evolved into a well-equipped institution, featuring modern classrooms, science laboratories, and a weather station for geography practicals.

It also stood out in co-curricular activities, offering swimming pools, cricket fields, basketball courts, and rugby and soccer pitches.

In 1963, following Kenya’s independence, the school was renamed Nakuru High School and began admitting local students. It became co-educational in 1964 and appointed its first African principal in 1982.

The school continued to grow, welcoming students of diverse races and backgrounds. However, rising enrolment led to its formal split in 2006 into Nakuru Boys High School and Nakuru Girls High School.

Today, sitting on 200 acres of land, Nakuru Boys High School is celebrated for producing a wide array of influential alumni across various sectors.

These include Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku and former Mount Kenya University Deputy Vice-Chancellor John Nderitu.

Others include former University of Nairobi Students Welfare Authority Director Robert Lugwe, and Professor of Environmental Geochemistry in the Department of Environmental Sciences at Pwani University Mwakio Tole.

Each year, over 300 students are admitted to the institution based on academic merit and individual choice, in line with Kenya’s education policy.

Performance

Until 2023, admissions were based on performance in the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination.

This was, however, replaced by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), introduced under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) framework.

In addition, Nakuru Boys has consistently upheld a strong academic record in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations nationally over the years.

In the 2024 KCSE, the school achieved a mean grade of 8.45.

School Fees

The government previously issued a directive outlining the maximum annual school fees that parents should pay.

Under new guidelines introduced in 2020 by the Ministry of Education, Kenya’s 103 national schools were grouped into four clusters.

Nakuru Boys High School was placed in Cluster Three (III), meaning the official annual fee cap for students is approximately Ksh75,798.

However, actual fees may vary slightly from school to school due to additional charges levied by individual institutions, such as for uniforms, motivation programs, or co-curricular activities.

Location and contacts

The school is located in Nakuru City, along the Nakuru-Bahati Road, about 500 meters off the Nakuru-Nairobi Highway. The institution borders the State House, Nakuru to the East.

In case you have any complaints, queries, or comments, you can reach the institution’s administration through the contacts below.
