Kenya Power has issued a public alert warning customers of a system disruption affecting electricity bill payments made via its M-Pesa Paybill number 888880.
According to Kenya Power, the glitch has affected thousands of customers purchasing prepaid electricity tokens.
Further, in a statement dated Monday, 12th May 2025, the utility company noted that the error is a result of a system interruption.
“We would like to inform our esteemed customers that we are currently experiencing a system interruption that is affecting payment of electricity bills through our Paybill 888888,” read the statement in part.

Kenya Power on the Way Forward
However, it has assured customers that its technical team is working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
“We are working to restore normalcy as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience caused,” added the statement.
Moreover, Kenya Power has advised customers to make payments directly at Kenya Power banking halls located across the country until the issue is resolved.
The company also apologized for the inconvenience caused and urged customers to rely only on official communication channels for updates.
“In the meantime, we encourage our customers to make payments at the Kenya Power banking halls located at various points across the country.”
Customers can also dial *977# to access services or seek support.

Complaints from Customers
Frustrated customers have taken to social media to, with many reporting delays in receiving their tokens even after successfully making mobile payments.
X user @kibet_reinard called on Kenya Power to address the concerns as he had been left stranded.
“What’s happening? Have bought tokens but no feedback from Kenya Power. Kindly help,” he stated.
Another user, @ngushuru, directly appealed to Kenya Power for assistance with a specific meter issue: “Hello Kenya Power, I need tokens for my prepaid meter.”
