Transport Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kipchumba Murkomen has praised the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) for doing a “good job” in the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) and the Nairobi Expressway.
In statement made on June 19, the CS said that he met with the CRBC President Wang Lijun where he expressed appreciation for what he termed as “high quality workmanship” exhibited during the construction of these key infrastructure.

“In my meeting with the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) President Wang Lijun, I conveyed our appreciation for the high-quality workmanship and professional approach exhibited during the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway and the Nairobi Expressway, among other critical infrastructure projects,” said Murkomen.
Murkomen also expressed the government’s readiness to work with CRBC to enhance the competitiveness of Kenya’s northern and LAPSSET corridors.

The CS was in China for the 15th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum held in Macau, China.
Murkomen Meets With
He noted that during the trip, he met several key players in the transport industry and made fruitful consultations.

“We are seeking collaborations and partnerships to modernize and improve our transport infrastructure.”

“On the sidelines of the 15th International Infrastructure Investment and Construction Forum in Macau, China, I held several fruitful consultations towards this end,” he said.
Additionally, Murkomen met a delegation from Ghuizhou Communication Construction Group, led by Vice-President Wang Jinsong.
He explained that the state-owned company had built some of the longest bridges while also preserving and safeguarding sensitive ecosystems.
“The meeting centered on opportunities for collaboration on roads and bridges under the Public Private Partnership model,” said Murkomen.
Nairobi Expressway Floods
CS Murkomen’s high praise of the China Road and Bridge Corporation’s work comes just months after the Expressway was marooned by the March-April-May Floods.
Heavy rains experienced in various parts of the country turned parts of the Nairobi Expressway into a raging river further causing disruptions for motorists.

Motorists were captured maneuvering flooded sections of road which was rendered impassable due to the rains.
Drainage systems were overwhelmed, leading to significant flooding on various sections of the major road.
The incident ignited debate among Kenyans about the city’s drainage system, further highlighting the need for a climate resilient infrastructure in Nairobi.
