United Bank for Africa (UBA) Kenya Bank Limited has appointed George Odour Otieno as its new board chairman. The bank made the announcement on May 28 following regulatory approval.
Otieno, a seasoned leader in financial services with both global and local experience, has served as a non-executive director on the UBA Kenya board since September 2021.
During his tenure, he chaired the board’s Finance and Governance Committees.
He succeeds Alphan Njeru, who concluded his term as chairman in November 2024. Njeru served as an independent non-executive director from 2016 and assumed the chairmanship in 2021.
“We express our sincere appreciation to Mr. Njeru for his leadership and contributions over the years,” the bank said in a statement.
Career of George Otieno
Otieno holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Lagos and is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute in London.

He currently chairs several boards including Capex Life Assurance Kenya and The Nairobi Club and serves as a non-executive director at WAICA Re.
He has also held senior executive roles at Africa Re and served as CEO of the African Trade Insurance Agency (now ATIDI).
UBA Kenya said it looks forward to Otieno’s leadership in steering its strategic vision, emphasizing its commitment to growth and innovation.
UBA Kenya Bank Ltd is regulated by the Central Bank of Kenya and is part of United Bank for Africa, known as “Africa’s Global Bank.”
