A petition has been filed before Milimani law courts seeking to allow convicts to attend funeral of family members.
The petitioner identified as Moses Dola, who is a former NTV journalist wants convicts permitted to go and bury their loved ones who have died.
Mr. Dola, who is currently serving his sentence, says that he is saddened that there is no law allowing inmates and convicts to attend burials of their family members.
According to him, if there are clear guidelines and mechanisms, it would be easy for the correction centers to facilitate convicts to attend funerals.
Moreover, on October 5, 2018, Dola was found guilty of manslaughter following the death of his wife Wambui Kabiru who was also a journalist. He was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Dola’s wife Kabiru was found dead on May 1, 2011, in their house in Umoja estate while Dola went into hiding. However, he turned himself in at Naivasha police station three days later.
Furthermore, in her ruling, High Court Judge Roselyn Korir who substituted the murder charge with manslaughter, stated that no one else who could explain exactly what happened to Kabiru on that fateful day because they (Kabiru and Dola) were the only people in the bedroom when the incident occurred.
