Alvin Linus Chivondo, a shoplifter has been arrested yet again after he was caught stealing from a Naivas Supermarket barely a month after he was bailed out by former Nairobi governor Mike Sonko for a similar offense.
In April 2022, Chivondo was convicted by a Nairobi Court after pleading guilty to shoplifting charges levelled against him. The court ordered him to pay Ksh.100,000 fine or serve one-year in jail.
Chivondo stole 5 kgs of rice, honey, tea leaves, and sugar; all amounting to Ksh.3,165 from a Naivas supermarket.
His conviction led to public uproar as many said the man was only trying to feed his family and that the sentensing was too harsh. As such political figures came to Chivondo’s rescue.
One of them was ODM leader Raila Odinga who took to Twitter calling for his release saying: “Let the courts get their priorities right, for once, you can’t jail a man for trying to feed his family.”
Moreover, Mike Sonko after overseeing Chivondo’s release from Prison, went further to give him one month’s worth of shopping as well as a job offer at his Upper Hill offices.
“We’ve offered Alvin Chivondo a job at our Upper Hill offices and our team in the office has shown him what his job entails. Am happy the young man is now free. It’s my hope he will be a responsible man,” Sonko said then.
Unfortunately, Chivondo is back at shoplifting yet again. He was reportedly arrested on Thursday, May 19, at Naivas Supermarket on Ronald Ngala street attempting to steal maize flour.
He is currently detained at Central Police Station awaiting arraignment.
