At least 15 people were killed and over 40 were wounded in a terrorist attack claimed by Isis, on a major Shiite holy site in the southern city of Shiraz on Wednesday October 26.
As reported by Iranian media among the 15 were two children and a few women.
“Loud screams were heard in the women’s section of the shrine at the time of adhan [the call for prayer] and suddenly an armed man was spotted with a Kalashnikov firing indiscriminately in the compound of the shrine,”
“After the initial burst of fire, the attacker went near the shrine and fired many rounds at those present at the scene,” an eyewitness told state media.
On the same day, clashes had broken out throughput Iran as people went to the burial site of Mahsa Amini in Saqqez to mark 40 days since her death.
The 22-year-old had been arrested by Iranian morality police with claims of her being indecently dresses as her hijab was worn half-way.
Iranian officials had then claimed she died after suffering a “heart attack” and falling into a coma, but her family said she had no pre-existing heart conditions.
The terror group ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attack, releasing a statement through its affiliated Amaq news agency that said one of its members had targeted groups of Sunni refusal infidels inside the shrine with his machine gun, causing the death of tens of them.
Iranian security forces have arrested two of the suspected attackers, and a manhunt is underway to capture a third.
