The Kenya National Union of Teachers(Knut) is demanding a 60 percent salary hike for teachers.
Knut Secretary General Collins Oyuu says the union has already presented a proposal for the hike to their employer, the Teachers Service Commission(TSC).
Knut wants a review of the 2021 – 2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The CBA did not contain any salary review component for the next five years.
“It is true that we signed a CBA that extended maternity leave days for our female teachers and introduced a paternity leave for male teachers, but with the current economic challenges, teachers need money benefits and hence a demand for a salary increment, ” said Mr Oyuu.
TSC and Knut began negotiations two weeks ago
The teacher’s union argues that teachers deserve a pay hike since the country’s economy has recovered from the Covid-19 pandemic shocks.
Oyuu wants TSC to present Knut’s proposal to the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) for approval.
“We both agreed to have a structured conversation and we agreed to have a structured salary increment,” he said.
At the same time Knut is demanding promotion of teachers with higher education qualifications.
According to the union, there are over 60,000 teachers with additional qualifications yet to be promoted.
