The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has raised concern over poor waste management in Homa Bay County.
Moreover, county director Josiah Nyandoro noted that the dumpsite in Homa Bay Town poses as a health hazard and further urged the county government to relocate it elsewhere.
“Homa Bay is performing dismally in waste management due to lack of mechanisms on collection and proper disposal,” Nyandoro said.
Likewise, the NEMA official stated that plastics form a huge chunk of solid waste, thence, terming it a serious environmental challenge in the county.
“Waste should be properly managed in line with the Waste Management Regulations of 2006 and Environmental Management and Coordination Act,” Nyandoro said.
Nonetheless, the NEMA official called on Governor Gladys Wanga’s administration to license vehicles that transport waste.
Furthermore, high population in major towns in the region and the lack of a proper system in the waste management sector has affected waste management in the county.
