Uhuru Kenyatta has shuffled the heads of missions abroad and nominated former IEBC commissioners who resigned “with immediate effect”, to deputize several missions abroad as of Thursday evening.
Lazarus Amayo has been appointed the new head of Kenyan Mission in Washington, Dr. Martin Kimani will head the Permanent Mission at the UN in New York.
Ambassador Kamau was recalled and appointed PS thereby creating a vacuum to the Mission at the United Nations.
Before his appointment to the Permanent Mission at the UN in New York, Dr. Kimani has been serving as a joint secretary to the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) committee.
In the reshuffle, Uhuru also appointed three ex-IEBC commissioners as deputy heads of missions.
Dr. Paul Kurgat was appointed the deputy head of mission to Moscow, Consolata Nkatha Maina – Italy, and Margaret Mwanchanya – Pakistan.
The three ex-IEBC commissioners resigned at in 2018 citing a fall out with IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati. Nkatha was then IEBC’s vice-chair.
They cited lack of confidence with Chebukati’s leadership at the poll agency following the disputed and contentious August 8, 2017 General Elections which saw President Uhuru’s election nullified by the Supreme Court.
“Instead under Chebukati’s leadership, the commission boardroom has become a venue for peddling misinformation, grounds for brewing mistrust and a space for scrambling and chasing individual glory and credit,” the trio said in a statement at the time.
Changes in Canada, Australia and Germany
Uhuru also made major changes in Kenyan Missions in Canada, Australia and Germany. The previous officeholders had already completed their term in office.
In the Kenyan Mission to Australia, Uhuru appointed John Tipis to head it whole in Canada, Immaculate Wambua who headed Americas Directorate at the Ministry will now be the new head.
Tom Amolo will head the Kenyan Mission in Berlin, Germany. He has been working as a special envoy for the campaign for the UNSC besides having also worked as Kenya’s envoy to Abuja, Pretoria and Paris.
