The Kenya Ports Authority has started effecting President Ruto’s Directive to switch back clearing of goods to the Mombasa Port.
According to a statement by the KPA managing director, John Mwangemi on Monday September 26, importers have the freedom of choosing a place for clearance and mode of transport for their goods.
The notice further advised shipping lines to facilitate importers’ nomination of place of clearance including Port clearance, Kenya Revenue Authority’s licensed Container Freights Stations and Kenya Ports Authority’s Inland Container depots.
“Kenya Ports Authority wishes to affirm its commitment to implement the directive by His Excellency the President during his inauguration on 13th September 2022 that “clearing of all goods and other attendant’s operational issues to revert to the Port of Mombasa,” KPA stated.
Today’s notice by KPA supplants the 2018 directive which had all importers use the SGR (Standard Gauge Railway) as their mode of transport.
During his inauguration speech, President Ruto affirmed that the directive to revert operations to the Mombasa port was necessitated by the need to boost the country’s economy.
“I will be issuing instructions for clearing of goods and other attendant operational duties to the port of Mombasa as I made a commitment to Kenyans. This will restore thousands of jobs in the city of Mombasa,” Ruto pointed out.
