Hundreds of Kenyans took to the streets of Nairobi on Thursday, July 7 to protest the high cost of living currently experienced in the country.
The multitude of Kenyans are protesting the hike in prices of commodities including; cooking oil, maize flour, wheat flour and sugar. As a result, many households are straining to make ends meet.
Moreover, protestors who traversed Nairobi’s CBD carrying sufurias, empty packets of sugar and flour, ended their protest at the office of the President at Harambee house.
Additionally, the protestors are now blaming the country’s leaders for failing to address the issue.
“Our elected leaders have failed us and Kenyans are going through so much and that is why we are here to demand for the reduction of prices for basic commodities,” one of the activists said.
Furthermore, one of the activists mentioned that, the government should stop faulting the Russia-Ukraine war for the high cost of living. Saying, the conflict has only worsened the situation.
“The prices of food were high even before the issue of Ukraine came, we are in this situation because of too much borrowing and the money goes into the pockets of a few,” he stated.
Similarly, the protestors complained about Raila Odinga and William Ruto. The noted that the two presidential front-runners are just giving Kenyans promises instead offering solutions.

“Raila is a friend of the President so it’s just a phone call away, Ruto has been in government for ten years and he is also giving promises, why can’t they help us now? another protester lamented.
Nonetheless, the government Spokesperson Cyrus Oguna has defended President Uhuru Kenyatta over the high cost of living presently being witnessed in the country.
According to Ogun, the Head of State is not to blame for the high cost of living. He also attributed it to the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
