Kisii county National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) Director, Leonard Ofula has warned members of the public against buying and using banned plastic papers.
Director Ofula stated that the NEMA officials had intensified surveillance to apprehend those sneaking the plastic bags across the border and selling them to small local vendors.
“NEMA officers have intensified surveillance to apprehend the suspects before they ferry the papers to the country and those selling them within the area” Ofula noted.
The director further warned those conducting the selling business and those still in use of the plastic bags of the dire consequences that would follow if caught.
Ofula appealed to courts, asking them to impose heavy fines on sellers, buyers, and users of the papers to deter others and foster a clean environment.
Some individuals noted that officers claiming to be from NEMA were harassing investors in real estate and demanding bribes from them threatening to write bad reports.
Ofula further warned against NEMA officials imposters, asking the public to report them.
The director advised people to demand official Identification Cards for the office and national before they allow any ‘NEMA official’ into their premises to avoid being conned.
He further stated that NEMA officials never take bribes.
“They threaten the investors that they will write bad reports on their premises and condemn them if they do not bribe them”
“NEMA officers do not demand bribes to write favorable Reports for investors. Report those who demand bribes and do not give them money,” Director Ofula noted.
