A tragic incident occurred at a hostel near the University of Eldoret, resulting in the death of a female student. According to reports, a third-year male student, identified as Elikana Kiplagat Korir, stabbed his girlfriend to death following a quarrel over their relationship. The police suspect the incident was caused by a love triangle brewing for some time.
The incident, which occurred on a Sunday, sparked an investigation by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers. The hostel, which the female student used, was the scene of the incident. The suspect, Korir, later attempted suicide by stabbing himself in the chest, but he was rescued and taken to the hospital, where he is in critical condition.
The Soy Sub County police commander, Henry Zuma, confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and officers collected a blood-stained kitchen knife from the scene. Zuma also revealed that they had not established what the two were studying at the university, as they had scant information about them.

Zuma expressed his condolences, saying, “We have lost a very young girl following what is suspected to be a love triangle. The suspect who attempted suicide by stabbing himself using the same knife was rushed to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) for treatment.”
A witness who lives near the hostel reported that the two students had locked themselves in the house for about four days before the incident, indicating issues in their relationship. The hostel’s owner rushed the suspect to the hospital after breaking into the house where there had been a commotion.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the University of Eldoret community and sparked discussions about the need for counseling services and student support. The university has not released an official statement on the matter at the time of writing.
