The government is in the process of upgrading the Angama Airstrip within the Maasai Mara Game Reserve to an International Airport.
The move is aimed at directly connecting foreign tourists to the world-famous game reserve
The upgrade will be done in three phases with the first phase costing Sh244 million.
Phase one of the project is expected to be complete by December of this year
The first phase will see an expansion of the existing runway from 1260 meters to 1380 meters and expansion of the width from 18 to 25 meters.
A 650meters access road, construction of 120 meters by 120 meters apron and two taxiways will also be constructed.
Fencing of the airport is also expected to be done in phase one
Phase two will include the expansion of the runway to 2500 meters length and the width expanded from 23 meters to 30 meters as well as the construction of a Very Important Person (VIP) lounge.
The final and third phase will see the expansion of the runway to 3300 meters long
The government through KAA acquired 44.7 hectares for expansion and modernization of the Airstrip which was constructed by the Mara Conservancy in the early 1990’s
