Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia on Saturday, May 14 announced that the much awaited Nairobi Expressway is finally open for public use.
Speaking during the commissioning of the road ahead of the launch, CS Macharia reported that so far, 11,000 thousand vehicles have been registered on the road, and among them, around 7,000 registered to use the electronic toll collection.
The CS added that Moja Expressway, a subsidiary of China Road and Bridge Corporation which is responsible for managing the road, has been registering over 800 vehicles daily since they publicized the registration process recently.
The Nairobi Expressway is expected to ease congestion along Mombasa Road and reduce travel time between Mlolongo and Westlands to an average of 15 minutes.
Moreover, CS Macharia stated that the old Mombasa Road is to be rehabilitated at a cost of Ksh.9 billion and will include a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) line. The contractors will also repair sections of the road damaged during the construction of the Expressway.
The contracts for these jobs are set to be signed next week.
Furthermore, the CS announced that President Uhuru Kenyatta will oversee the official launch of the Expressway in the coming weeks.
