Swearing in of the 124 MCAs of the third County Assembly of Nairobi is ongoing at City Hall where the MCAs take oath of office.
The Members of County Assembly during their swearing in were allowed to use both English and Swahili.
Clerk Edward Gichana on Thursday laid a list of the names of the people elected as Members on the Table of the Nairobi County Assembly.
The clerk later administered the oath of office to the elected and nominated members in order of the alphabet.
The oldest serving MCAs were however giving the priority. In that regard, Mihang’o MCA Paul Kados and Kariobangi South Robert Mbatia were the first ones to take the oath.
Security has been tightened within the Nairobi County Assembly precincts in line with swearing in.
Roads leading in and out of the assembly (City Hallway and Wabera Street) were cordoned off as of 7 am with anti-riot police officers on standby.
“Before assuming a State office, acting in a State office, or performing any functions of a State office, a person shall take and subscribe the oath or affirmation of office, in the manner and form prescribed by the Third Schedule or under an Act of Parliament.” Article 74 of the Kenyan constitution, Oath of office of State officers.
The MCAs are expected to elect the Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly afterwards.
