Plans to start the construction of the Nairobi-Mombasa expressway are at an advanced stage.
Already, a feasibility study for the 482 Kilometres project has been presented by a task-force.
The new road will have four lanes on both ends.
Korean Overseas Infrastructure & Urban Development Corporation Africa (KIND) company undertook the study.
The study was done in partnership with the Ministry of Transport, and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA).
Like the Nairobi Expressway, the project will be undertaken under the Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) model.
The Nairobi -Mombasa Expressway will start from Machakos to Mariakani.
It is one of Kenya’s Vision 2030 flagship projects.
One section of the road will run from Kibwezi to Voi and will cover 132 kilometres
The second section will run from Voi to Mombasa, a distance of 160 kilometres.
The Voi-Mombasa section will be divided into ten sections including Mombasa-Mariakani, Mariakani-Maji ya Chumvi, Maji ya Chumvi-Bachuma Gate, Bachuma Gate-Mtito Andei, Mtito Andei-Sultan Hamud, Sultan Hamud-Machakos, Machakos-Athi River, and Athi River-JKIA.
Motorists will be allowed to drive with speeds of up to 120km/h.
Additionally at least 2,573 jobs will be created through operations and maintenance of the road.
