The Medical Council of Kenya (MCK) is on Friday,27th January 2023 set to hold a meeting with media industry stakeholders to deliberate on the increasing cases of fraudsters masquerading as journalists.
In a statement sent to newsrooms on Thursday morning, MCK Chief Executive Officer David Omwoyo said that Council is concerned with the increase in cases of masqueraders who attend events with the intention of harassing and extorting organizers.
According to Omwoyo, the Friday stakeholders meeting is expected to deliberate on the matter and agree on practical measures to enhance professionalism and to deal with the rising cases of fraudsters posing as journalists
“The Council is committed to fostering a conducive working environment for journalists and media practitioners through improved standards and constantly engaging relevant stakeholders to address pertinent issuing affecting the sector” said Omwoyo.

Omwoyo says the Council will remain at the forefront in protecting credibility of the media and journalists by ensuring that only accredited journalists are allowed to practice in the country, in line with the Constitutional provisions.
The Media Council of Kenya is an independent national institution established by the Media Council Kenya Act, No. 46 of 2013 for purposes of setting of media standards and ensuring compliance with those standards as envisaged by Article 34(5) on Freedom of the Media of the Constitution of Kenya.
Further, pursuant to sections 6(d) and 23 of the Act, the Council undertakes to promote and enhance ethical and professional standards amongst journalists and media enterprises and also accredits journalists across the country.
