Musalia Mudavadi has said he is no longer the Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader.
The Prime Cabinet Secretary nominee made this announcement on Monday, October 17 while appearing before the 15-member Committee on Appointments vetting CS nominees at the National Assembly.
During the vetting process, the Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetangula, who is also the committee chair, asked Mudavadi if he has held any position in a political party, to which he said yes.
“The most recent one was being leader of the Amani National Congress,” Mudavadi told the House.
When asked if he still held that office at the ANC party, Musalia Mudavadi said no.
Moreover, the Prime Cabinet Secretary nominee was also cross-examined on the ill-famed Goldenberg scandal of the1990s that led to a loss of about 10 percent of the country’s GDP.
However, Mudavadi who was the then finance minister, noted that he was just new in office when the issue was reported.
“This committee must know Golden Scandal was a scheme and even the inquiry report found me not involved. The matter of Golden Scandal was dealt with by courts and those who were found guilty were dealt with and I was not one of them,” he said.
Furthermore, Speaker Wetangula had earlier in the vetting process ended the ongoing debate on the legalities of the Prime CS position by stating that Mudavadi’s nomination is legal.
Likewise, the speaker ruled that the cabinet slot was within the law; therefore, the committee shall continue and vet Mudavadi in accordance with the house vetting committee standing orders.
In addition, the Prime Cabinet Secretary nominee Musalia Mudavadi was the first to appear before the committee at 9.00 am.
The vetting exercise is set to run through to Saturday, October 22, with the exclusion of Thursday, October 20, in respect to observing Mashujaa Day.
Similarly, Justin Muturi, who is the Attorney General nominee, was set to appear at 10.30 am, followed by Defence CS nominee Aden Duale who was scheduled to appear before the vetting committee at 11.30 am.
The nominee for the Foreign and Diaspora Affairs docket, Dr Alfred Mutua was scheduled to face the committee at 2.30 pm, whereas her Water, Sanitation and Irrigation counterpart Alice Wahome would close the day’s exercise after her vetting which is slated at 3.30 pm.
