Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna recounted the years past when MPs from Western Kenya were rumored to have visited State House, Nairobi during the era of President Daniel Moi for a meal of Ugali.
The Nairobi Senator was responding to remarks made by his Kakamega counterpart Bonny Khalwale who said that Sifuna fought his way as a Luhya from Bungoma County to the positions of Nairobi Senator and the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.
“It has been the honor of my life to learn at the feet of political giants like Raila, James Orengo and like the Governor of Kisumu (Anyang Nyong’o) and it’s not an opportunity everyone gets. It is not every leader who can reach out and make somebody who was a nondescript politician like I was, the Secretary General of a party as large as ODM” Sifuna said.

The ODM Secretary General further told Senator Khalwale that the positions he holds in his party and the Senate are opportunities given for him to serve the country and not his community.
“These positions do not mean anything to me. Even for you Khalwale, there is no Luhya who benefits because you are the chief whip. In fact, if I fail to perform as a Secretary General it is a detriment to my community, you will remember Khalwale, there was a story about Luhya MPS who were Secretary Generals and how they used to run to State House to eat Ugali. You will remember that there was that conversation. If Sifuna has done anything for the community, it is to wipe away that reputation of Luhya SG’s.
The Nairobi Senator further affirmed his allegiance to his political party stating that it is public knowledge that he cannot betray his leader by visiting the State House.
“I will maintain fidelity to my political party. You will never see me at State House, going to eat ugali like Martin Shikuku (former Butere MP), at least I have done that for my community,” Sifuna said.
