The government has directed a traffic crackdown nationwide on drivers and vehicles following the recent surge of road accidents in the country.
Police spokesperson Bruno Isohi Shioso through a statement delivered on Wednesday, June 8, said the nationwide crackdown will be done in conjunction with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
The directive which commenced on Wednesday seeks to pull out all traffic violators.
“The Inspector-General of Police and the NTSA Director-General has directed a joint Multi-Agency crackdown to weed out all noncompliant motor vehicles and motorists, who are violating the Traffic Act and related laws. The directive takes immediate effect,” the statement read.
According to the Inspector general, most road accidents that have led to more than 1,968 people losing their lives as of June, 3, 2022, were a result of human-related factors. Therefore, he called on road users to cooperate with the multi-agency teams as they embark on their operations.
Moreover, IG Hillary Mutyambai further warned motorists with non-compliant vehicles to keep off the main roads, so as to avoid inconveniencing passengers.
Shioso also urged road users to exercise maximum caution to prevent road accidents.
