President Uhuru Kenyatta has said that intermediary cities In Africa will play a critical role in controlling human congestion within Africa’s capital cities .
Speaking in Kisumu on Tuesday when he officially opened the 9th Edition of Africities conference, President Kenyatta called for a sustained development of intermediary cities across the continent.
He noted that intermediary cities in Africa have the potential to host the influx of people migrating from rural to urban areas and called for more government investment in such cities.
The President said that his “government has been building low-cost houses in Nairobi, Kisumu, Mombasa and Nakuru” as part of measures taken in addressing challenges facing Kenya’s intermediary cities
He called for further planning to surmount challenges of health, water supply, shelter, and infrastructure in the intermediary cities.
Raila Odinga, the AU high representative of infrastructure is also attending the conference that has attracted over 4800 delegates
