Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has said Mombasa Port should be modernized.
According to the senator who made these remarks on Thursday, November 3, modernizing the port will create employment for hundreds of people.
“The Port of Mombasa must be modernized. We must attract cruise ships to create employment in Kenya,” Ledama said.
Moreover, the lawmaker who doubles up as Senate Minority Whip, also proposed that the government should allow shipping lines to sign Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) to build their own terminals for quick turnover of commodities.
Likewise, President William Ruto on Thursday, November 3 directed for an audit to be done on Mombasa Port.
According to Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua the audit report will help to identify what else was mishandled or illegally possessed in the port.
“Ruto has already directed the new CS Kipchumba Murkomen to audit the port facilities and establish what else has been stolen by the lords of impunity, state capture and conflict of interest with a view of restoring the natural resource to the people of Kenya,” DP Gachagua said.

Furthermore, the deputy president noted that Mombasa port is a natural resource and should not be given to selfish individuals.
“The port is for all Kenyans and Ruto’s government will secure it because it belongs to Kenyans and Coast residents should be given a chance to benefit from it,” he said.
