Sheikh Guyo Gorsa a Muslim cleric on Thursday May 5, shocked a Nairobi Court when he refused to leave Kamiti Prison despite being acquitted.
The former Madrassa teacher was arrested in 2018 by the Anti-Terror Police Unit and was afterwards accused of commissioning acts of terror and being an Al Shabaab operative, using his status as a religious leader in Marsabit to recruit youths into the illegal group.
He told Magistrate Wendy Muchemi that he did not want to be released because he feared for his life. Guyo refused to be handed over to his relatives after the court set him free claiming he would be killed by government agents.
The Muslim cleric requested to remain in custody until his application to be granted State protection is determined by the High Court. The magistrate agreed with Guyo’s application for a period of 30 days on the condition that he pays for remand services.
