Ugunja MP Opiyo Wandayi has fired back at the Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome over pronouncing the planned anti-government protests as illegal.
Wandayi, speaking during a church service in Embakasi on Sunday March 26, questioned the grounds upon which his statement was made.
The National Assembly Minority leader further explained that they had given a one week notice as required.
“The other day they told us that our notice was handed in late and that is why they termed the protests illegal. This time round we have given notice for tomorrow’s actions a week in advance,” said Wandayi.
Mr. Wandayi also said that it was constitutionally right to congregate, picket, demonstrate.
“Let me tell you Mr. Koome that the right that have been enshrined in the constitution which Kenyans fought for are not favours from any particular person or authority,” he said.
“Especially the right to congregate, picket, demonstrate and to do anything we want to do, we shall continue to exercise it whether you like it or not. People must respect each other.” He added.

The Inspector General had earlier addressed the media on Sunday in Nairobi, saying no one will be allowed to hold demonstrations this following week.
Koome asked Kenyans to come to work as usual and conduct their daily commitments as he pledged more security officers will be deployed.
“If they are doubting our results let them wait for tomorrow, if they think they can kill all of us we invite them tomorrow to do so,” Koome said.
