Burkina Faso’s President Paul-Henri Damiba has offered to resign from his position as the head of state two days after army officers announced his deposition in the country’s second coup in a year.
Captain Ibrahim Traore accepted the conditional resignation to avoid further violence after Friday’s coup, promising of Damiba’s safety.
The self-declared military leader through a press conference agreed to the resignation arrangement honoring the seven conditions presented.
Damiba set “seven conditions” for stepping down. They included a guarantee of security for his allies in the military, “a guarantee of his security and rights”, and assurance that those taking power will respect the pledge he gave to West Africa’s regional bloc for a return to civilian rule within two years.
Friday marks the second time in 2022 that Burkina Faso has declared a coup on the government.
The military officers announced the deposition of Damiba, the dissolution of the transitional government and the suspension of the constitution.
Traore officially was named head of state after he accepted the conditions given by Damiba.
Damiba himself came to power in a coup in January, installing himself as leader of the country’s 16 million people after accusing elected president Roch Marc Christian Kabore of failing to beat back armed fighters.
