This was Liverpool’s biggest-ever win against their arch-rivals, and it boosted their hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.
United, who were on a high after winning the Carabao Cup and were in the mix for the title race, looked promising in the first half but were completely outplayed in the second half, resulting in their worst defeat since 1931.
Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool’s coach, hailed his team’s performance as “super front foot, super lively, super active” and praised their excellent football display against a team in form.
Liverpool’s win took them to fifth place, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand.
The victory was a major surprise given the contrast in fortunes of the two clubs since Liverpool’s 4-0 win at Anfield in April 2022.
United’s humiliating defeat left them in third place and out of the title race, while Liverpool’s fourth win in five league matches reignited their hopes of securing a top-four finish.
