Olympic steeplechase champion Conseslus Kipruto has been arraigned before Kapsabet Court facing charges of defilement and engaging in an indecent act with a 15-year-old girl.
Appearing before Principal Magistrate David Ocharo on Monday, Kipruto denied the charges and was released on a KSh 200, 000 cash bail.
Kipruto wore a red sweatshirt with the hood pulled over his head in an attempt to hide his face from photographers at the courthouse. He also had a mask on because of the coronavirus. Police officers who escorted Kipruto to court tried to prevent journalists from taking photographs of him.
The 25-year-old Kipruto, who is a policeman, was charged in a courthouse in Kapsabet, a town in the high-altitude Rift Valley region that is famous for producing a stream of world-class distance runners.
Charge: Defilement / Statutory Rape
Kipruto was charged with what is referred to as “defilement” in Kenyan law — sexual intercourse with a minor under the age of eighteen. Because of the girl’s age, Kipruto faces at least 20 years in prison if convicted, according to Kenya’s sexual offenses laws.
The charge is comparable to statutory rape.
According to the charges, Kipruto is alleged to have defiled the minor on diverse dates of October 20-21 in Tironiin village in Nandi.
The Prosecution claimed that the 25-year-old athlete eloped with the teenager prompting the parents to report the incident at Mosoriot police station.
The case has been slated for hearing on May 10, 2021.
Kipruto, a two-time 3000m steeplechase World champion, was arrested on November 11, after the case was filed at Mosoriot police post by the minor’s parents, where they alleged that their daughter, who went missing from home, was staying at the athlete’s home in Chesumei.
Kipruto won the Rio Olympic 3000m steeplechase. He followed that up with back-to-back world titles in 2017 and 2019.
He hasn’t completed a race this season. He withdrew from the Diamond League meet in Monaco in August after testing positive for the coronavirus.
