Former Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiangi has shared his piece of advice on how the government can address the frustrations of Gen Z.
Speaking during a church service at PCEA Thika Town Church in Kiambu County, the former Interior CS emphasized the need for the government and parents to listen to the concerns raised by Gen Z.
“Let us, especially as parents, encourage one another as we raise our children, because the first environment of training is the family and the home. In addition to the knowledge, we are seeking on how to guide our children, let us also ensure we develop strong and deep relationships with them. Speak to them, love them, and allow them to express themselves,” said the former CS.
Matiangi Urges Ruto’s Government to Listen to the Plight of Gen Z
Additionally, the former CS criticized how the government handled the Gen Z protests, where some protesters were met with brutality from the police.
“What we are seeing right now in our country right now is the challenge where we are contesting the voices of our children when in actual fact that should be a natural thing that when our children should be speaking to us and when they are talking we listen to them,” said the former CS.

Matiangi further warned that if young people are not listened to, society will fail to nurture responsible and patient individuals capable of moving Kenya to the next level.
The former Interior CS’s statement comes at a time when political leaders, religious leaders, and civil society groups are urging President William Ruto to address the grievances raised by Gen Z, rather than responding with brutality when they demand accountability.
Ruto Criticized for Police Brutality
National Council Churches of Kenya (NCCK) condemned governments actions towards Gen Z protestors on June 25, 2025.
“The pain caused by the state-sponsored abductions, torture and killings of the youth is immeasurable. Kenya has indeed become a police state. Why is the government so determined to rule by fear and terror rather than simply applying the Constitution and Laws of Kenya?
To all our young people, we urge you to condemn police brutality and stand firm in the demand for justice, accountability and good governance through peaceful demonstrations and civic engagement. The time for change is coming,” said NCCK.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua also condemned the police brutality inflicted on protesters.
In the strongest terms possible I condemn the use of excessive force and live bullets by the Police on peaceful and unharmed Gen-Z protesters witnessed yesterday across the country. Intimidating the peaceful and young demonstrators who were only remembering their slain colleagues in the struggle only complicates the matter on you and your rogue regime, Mr. Ruto.
