President William Ruto has hit back at Standard Media over its headline, Judas’ Betrayal, which referenced the political union between him and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking during a church service in Ntulele, Narok, on Sunday April 20, Ruto said that who do not know God are now telling him through newspapers that his unity with Raila is an act of betrayal.

He went on to state that where there is unity, God commands a blessing terming the headline as “shameful and tragic”.
“There are those who, through newspapers, want to tell us that Unity is a betrayal. How sad and shameful that the devil has a different message against unity. The devil is a liar,” Ruto said.

“Those who to preach to us that unity is betrayal, we want to tell them to go and read the Bible.”
Ruto Slams Standard Media Over ‘Judas’ Betrayal’ Headline
The Head of State went on to state that he is unapologetic and unashamed about uniting the people of Kenya, saying that unity will take the country far, help achieve much, and invite God’s blessings upon the nation.

“I am happy, and I want to prophesy that Kenya will continue to be a God-fearing nation, and the gates of hell cannot overcome this nation,” he added.
“Where there is unity, God commands a blessing, and that is why we are working hard to unite the people of Kenya. That is why I am proud that Raila and all our parties are working together, because in their God will truly bless our nation.”

Ruto went on to defend the formation of a broad-based government by quoting Bible verses, including one from Genesis, psalms stating that where people are united, nothing is impossible.
Today’s Standard Newspaper headlined “Judas’ Betrayal” and featured photos of President William Ruto and Raila Odinga on either side.
The accompanying text read: “Just as the biblical Eden was lost through defiance and betrayal, so too has Kenya’s dream of a just and prosperous nation been squandered by those entrusted to guard it.”
“Our founding vision lies in ruins betrayed at the altar of political expediency, impunity, and personal gain. Like the biblical fall, the country’s descent is not by accident, but by deliberate rebellion against the law, institutions, and public trust.”

Standard Media’s Bold Headlines Capture Kenya’s Political Turmoil
This is not the first time President Ruto has responded to a headline by the Standard. On March 2, 2025, the Head of State hit back at the Mombasa-based media house over a headline that labeled him a cunning leader.
”If you read today’s newspaper (the Standard), the headline states that Ruto is very cunning. I want to tell them that am not as cunning as they think. This is the grace of God that is leading me. We believe in God,” Ruto stated.
“Because I escaped the traps that they set, they say that am cunning. That is not the case, I am just doing what Abraham did in the bible. He trusted in God even when things were tough. It is not what you are saying, it is God’s favour.”
The Standard Media has consistently crafted bold and daring headlines that capture Kenya’s turbulent political landscape.
With titles like “Ruto’s Blunders” dissecting the president’s foreign policy missteps, and “The Butcher” casting a critical spotlight on Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces, the paper has not shied away from controversy.
These front-page stories have sent shockwaves across the political scene, calling out President William Ruto’s diplomatic challenges and spotlighting alleged corruption within government ranks.
