Protesters have set vehicles on fire during the ongoing demonstrations in Nairobi’s CBD, demanding justice for Albert Ojwang, a blogger who died in police custody.
Some business owners also opted to close down after police lobbed Tear gas to disperse protesters.
The unrest began around 11 am when demonstrators gathered along Harambee Avenue, chanting slogans and waving placards calling for accountability.
The youth flooded the streets of Nairobi’s central business district, calling for the resignation of Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat.
The demonstrations are coinciding with Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi’s presentation of the 2025/2026 Budget.
Protesters occupied major streets and landmarks, including City Hall, Jeevanjee Gardens, and the Parliament Buildings.

They also took over important roads like Harambee Avenue, in what appeared to be an effort to challenge the security cordon around Parliament.

Albert, known for his advocacy on reform and digital rights, was detained at the Nairobi Central Police Station before his death under circumstances now drawing widespread scrutiny.
Government pathologist Dr. Benard Midia, who conducted the postmortem, said the activist suffered severe injuries consistent with assault.
The cause of death was determined to be a combination of head trauma, neck compression, and widespread soft tissue injuries.
“The injuries were externally inflicted and point towards assault,” Midia said during a briefing. “They include serious injuries to the head, signs of neck compression, and bruises across the upper limbs, trunk, and lower limbs.”
