Several bars and entertainment joints are counting losses after being raided late in the night by officers from the Nairobi City County Government (NCCG)officers.

The raid, which was conducted on Saturday, June 27, targeted entertainment joints located across the capital city.

According to a statement from Nairobi County government, the raid was geared towards nabbing law brakers including establishments without the necessary licenses.

The joints raided were also said to have been violating county rules and engaging in noise pollution.

Consequently, the county officers issued closure notices to the establishments including Mnazini bar and restaurant along Limuru Road, Rosslyn total petrol station.

Crackdown Launched on Bars and Liquor Joints

In May, the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) announced a nationwide crackdown on bars and liquor joints around schools to ensure the wellbeing of children.

“NACADA hereby announces a Nationwide Crackdown aimed at enforcing regulations regarding the placement of bars and other alcohol dispensing outlets in proximity to educational institutions or areas catering to individuals below the age of eighteen,” stated the authority.

This followed the establishment of new rules and regulation by Nairobi County government, to be adhered to by such establishments.

According to a notice from Sakaja, nightclubs will be established in zones which are considered to be predominantly commercial nodes with minimal residential developments.

In addition, Sakaja appointed eight people to the Nairobi City County Alcoholic Drinks Control Licensing Board.

Moreover, in a gazette notice dated March 1, Sakaja charged the 8 to serve as Board and Sub-County Liquor Board Committee Members for a period of three years.

Landmark Ruling on Joints and Churches in Residential Areas

The Environmental and Land Court (ELC) ruled in favor of an association within Mirema Estate, awarding residents Ksh5 million in compensation for noise pollution from three bars and a church operating within the area in May 12.

Further, the court found that the loud noise from these establishments violated the residents’ rights to a clean and healthy environment as provided for under Article 42 of the Constitution.

Additionally, both the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) and Nairobi City County were held liable for neglecting their duties to ensure the residents’ rights were safeguarded.
